Innovative Design compared the cost-effectiveness and benefits of LEED rating levels
to other green building standards (including 2030 Challenge, ASHRAE, and Energy
Star). The study also considered the most effective and energy-saving strategies for
applying LEED to a specific owner and region. This analysis later served as the
rationale for a LEED silver requirement in all new school designs.
OHIO SCHOOL FACILITIES COMMISSION GREEN SCHOOLS INITIATIVE
GO SPEC
After reviewing OSFC’s current building guidelines, Innovative Design developed additional specifications to achieve sustainable strategies in designing schools. The specifications are titled as GO SPEC (Green Ohio Specifications), and they are organized according to CSI Master Format to provide sustainable strategies division by division. GO SPEC also included detailed recommendations on the technical aspects, such as daylighting, solar hot water system schematics, rainwater harvesting schematics, plug load, and energy efficient kitchen equipment.
Daylighting Guidelines
Innovative Design reviewed the Ohio School Design Guidelines and analyzed typical spaces in elementary, middle, and higher education buildings. Daylighting guidelines were developed for every typical space for 3 representative climate locations in the State of Ohio. A daylighting guide specific to Ohio was also developed as part of this effort.
Workshops & Reviews
Innovative Design has been delivering general sustainability workshops as well as workshops on specific green strategies, such as daylighting, solar hot water system, and rainwater harvesting strategies, to school architects, engineers and OSFC personnel.
Innovative Design has been reviewing school building design plans and consulting with architects and engineers to ensure proper execution of sustainable solutions of GO SPEC. To date we have assisted 16 A&E teams with our OSFC Green Schools Initiative.
