High Performance Schools Video
Convincing School Boards to build sustainably

Available on VHS or CD Rom: The High Performance Schools video was funded by the United States Department of Energy and produced by Innovative Design to increase the awareness of the many benefits of high performance, sustainable schools and to help convince school boards and school decisionmakers to build sustainably. The 30-min video showcases ten successful examples of high performance, sustainable schools for communities to consider when they commission a new school or improve older ones. 

The High Performance School video was developed through the EnergySmart Schools program. Through this program, the U.S. Department of Energy aims to create better teaching and learning environments by encouraging energy-efficient design and to help schools achieve EnergyStar label recognition. Rebuild America is the national community network that assists every school district in getting this done.  The objective of this video is provide sustainable design advocates with information to convince their school system to make informed decisions regarding energy and environmental issues that are important to their school, community, and country. Our schools should make a strong statement that saving energy and protecting our environment is important.  To convince schools boards to select sustainable strategies for planning, designing, building and maintaining their school facilities, the video demonstrates six main reasons for building a sustainable school:

  • Reducing Operating Costs Designing Buildings that Teach  Improving Academic Performance Protecting our Environment Designing for Health, Safety and Comfort
  • Supporting Community Values 
For each of these key issues, examples of schools implementing sustainable solutions or energy-efficient strategies as a successful way to reach the above goals are showcased.
