Isaac Dickson Elementary School is a magnet school emphasizing hands-on learning to achieve academic excellence. Sustainability, an enhanced experiential learning environment, community activity, and safety were highly emphasized during extensive programming sessions with key stakeholders: staff and teachers, students, parents, the neighboring church, the Asheville Fire Department, Asheville police officers, and extended community members.
Innovative Design and Legerton Architecture designed the new IDES to be net-zero including solar PV, have a water efficiency goal of a minimum 70% use of rainwater captured from the new school’s roof, reduce total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrogen discharge from the site by a minimum of 90%, all while providing a learning environment full of experiential learning opportunities and flexible to the cirriculum of IDES.
